HEXACO assessment and the Honesty-Humility factor
HEXACO is the Big Five plus a sixth factor, Honesty-Humility, recovered from lexical studies across a dozen languages. It exists because the Big Five systematically misses one thing: the person who is disciplined, sociable, stable, and entirely willing to exploit you.
Factors: H, E, X, A, C, O
Honesty-Humility — the factor the Big Five omits
Ashton & Lee, the empirical case for six factors
What Honesty-Humility adds
Ashton and Lee's lexical work found a sixth replicable factor spanning sincerity, fairness, greed-avoidance and modesty. Low scorers are entitled, materially acquisitive, and instrumentally willing to bend rules and people. High Conscientiousness does not detect them — a disciplined fraudster is still disciplined.
This is the single most practical argument for HEXACO over the Big Five in a selection context. The behaviours that end careers and trigger litigation — expense fraud, harassment, data theft, credit-taking — load on Honesty-Humility far more cleanly than on Agreeableness or Conscientiousness.
HEXACO versus Big Five: when to use which
For most individual-contributor roles the Big Five plus an integrity scale is sufficient. HEXACO earns its place where the cost of a low-integrity hire is asymmetric: fiduciary roles, roles with unsupervised access to money or data, and any leadership position where the hire will control others' careers.
TalentSpark runs both. The overlap is real — HEXACO's Emotionality and Agreeableness are rotations of the Big Five's Neuroticism and Agreeableness rather than replacements — so the marginal cost of adding HEXACO to a battery is small and it is delivered adaptively alongside everything else.
HEXACO and the Dark Triad measure related things differently
Low Honesty-Humility is the common core of narcissism, Machiavellianism and psychopathy; the research literature treats it as substantially the same variance approached from opposite directions. Running both is not redundant, because the Dark Triad scales separate the three dark constructs from one another while HEXACO gives you a normal-range trait score with proper norms.
In practice: HEXACO tells you where someone sits in the population. The Dark Triad scales tell you which flavour of risk you are looking at, and the interview guide probes accordingly.
Frequently asked questions
Is HEXACO better than the Big Five?
It is more complete for selection purposes, because Honesty-Humility captures counterproductive-behaviour variance the Big Five leaves unmodelled. For predicting task performance specifically, the two perform comparably.
What does a low Honesty-Humility score mean?
It indicates a tendency toward entitlement, status-seeking, and willingness to use others instrumentally. It is a normal-range trait, not a diagnosis, and it is not disqualifying on its own — it is a signal to structure the role, the oversight and the interview differently.
Can HEXACO be used for internal promotion decisions?
Yes, and the leadership case is stronger than the entry-level one, because the damage a low-H leader does scales with the number of people reporting to them. Apply the same adverse-impact monitoring you would to any selection instrument.
